Picture yourself on a new site. You were bored, wandering around on StumbleUpon hoping to find something interesting when after several pages, you settled on one that looked promising. The information is really good, well written, and just what you needed. After looking around, you realize the site is huge. Hundred upon hundreds of posts await your reading. Where do you begin? You could look at the list of related posts at the bottom of the page you are on, but on the side, you see two words that catch your attention: Popular Posts.
1st on Google – Week 15
Welcome back to my journey to being 1st on Google. This is the 15th update. If you missed the any of the posts, you can find the first one here, 14th Week update here (last week), and the ones in between on my Project page. Below are the results as of Sunday, 05-06-12 (click here to do your own search):
- #5 – My LinkedIn profile (no change from last week at #5)
- #9 – My personal blog, BlueCapra.com, no picture??? (up 2 places from last week at #11)
- #23 – @bookwormlaser on Twitter ( down 2 spots from last week at #21)
- #24 – My Google+ profile (down 1 spot from last week at #23)
- #25 – My profile on Vimeo – check out my video series Can You Etch It (up 3 place from last week at #28)
This week I am at #5, same as last week. The top spots #1 – #4 are occupied again by Wikipedia, IMDb, and LinkedIn (all the people named Alan Reeves, there are 25 of us). Overall, my top 5 results increased 2 places with the first 5 results all occurring in the first 25 places, a first for the journey (5 results in the top 25). I showed up 13 times in the top 100 search results which is a new record.
How To Start A Blog – Step 2 – URL and Hosting
Welcome back to How To Start A Blog. This is step 2, URL and Hosting. If you missed step 1, you can find it here; How To Start A Blog – Step 1 – Theme. To recap, here are the steps you need to have completed before you move on:
- Think about your subject
- Decide on your overall theme
- Compile a list of 25+ specific blog topics you want to write about
- Start writing a few posts in a text editor or word processor

Selecting a URL
Selecting a URL and hosting is a big decision. Let’s start with the URL. A web address or URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is one of the most important parts of your blog. It should convey the main focus of your site, not be too long or difficult to spell, and be memorable. Most importantly, it must be available.
One bit of advice I try to follow is from Kevin Rose, the founder of Digg: You need to be able to tell someone what your domain is, in a loud room, without having to spend 5 minutes trying to explain it. Take for example his site Digg. Simply a word with an extra letter. Easy. Now, consider SCVNGR which is a really cool app and site but difficult to explain quickly.
This advice came from an episode of the Random Show (not sure which one) where he and Tim Ferriss talks about … well… random stuff. Great series with a lot of info.
1st on Google – Week 14
Welcome back to my journey to being 1st on Google. This is the 14th update. If you missed the any of the posts, you can find the first one here, 13th Week update here (last week), and the ones in between on my Project page. Below are the results as of Sunday, 04-29-12 (click here to do your own search):
- #5 – My LinkedIn profile (no change from last week at #5)
- #11 – The About Me page from my personal blog, BlueCapra.com, with picture (up 5 places from last week at #12)
- #21 – My Google+ profile (no change from last week at #21)
- #23 – My personal blog, BlueCapra.com, with picture (up 26 places from last week at #49)
- #28 – My profile on Vimeo – check out my video series Can You Etch It (up 25 place from last week at #52)
This week I am at #5, same as last week. The links occupying the top 4 spots include IMDb, Wikipedia (twice), and a Facebook link for the Immature Entrepreneur, Alan Reeves (not me). This last one is a bit of a surprise as I have not seen it that high up ever, usually hovering around #8 or lower. My first occurrence is at #5 and overall, my top 5 results Increased 56 places with the first 5 results all occurring in the first 28 places. I showed up 12 times in the top 100 search results which is a new record. It does seem that the results can fluctuate a great deal week to week (sometimes referred to as the Google dance) but the same big sites are showing up time and time again.
Find A Way
Years ago, I read the following quote:
“We will either find a way or make one” – Hannibal
This quote has stuck in my mind for a number of reasons but mostly, it has become the motivation to move forward. Too many times we give up on projects that are not going well or that we are stuck on. We wait for inspiration, help, or something else that will give us the boost to get over the next hill. What happens if the boost never comes? Will you wait forever?
To be a success, you must make your way through life. You can’t wait until someone else has cleared the path, sometimes you just have to blaze the trail yourself. You may have help or you may not, but for you to find success, you must move forward, finding a way or making one yourself.
