Welcome back to my journey to being 1st on Google. This is the 15th update. If you missed the any of the posts, you can find the first one here, 14th Week update here (last week), and the ones in between on my Project page. Below are the results as of Sunday, 05-06-12 (click here to do your own search):
- #5 – My LinkedIn profile (no change from last week at #5)
- #9 – My personal blog, BlueCapra.com, no picture??? (up 2 places from last week at #11)
- #23 – @bookwormlaser on Twitter ( down 2 spots from last week at #21)
- #24 – My Google+ profile (down 1 spot from last week at #23)
- #25 – My profile on Vimeo – check out my video series Can You Etch It (up 3 place from last week at #28)
No Picture???
My second occurrence at #9 disturbed me for a major reason; my picture was missing. Back in the 1st week update, I wrote about how Google looked at authorship and how to have your picture show up in the results. Earlier this week, I decided to change a few things with my file structure. I created over eighty 301 redirects for different posts and one for my About page. Until last week, my about page was about-me. I decided I wanted it to be just about, so I changed it, setup a 301 redirect, and all was good. Apparently, I forgot to tell Google+ about the change. Sorry Google+, I should have thought about you… Hopefully, the big G won’t be upset for too long and it doesn’t seem to have effected the search results. We’ll know more next week.
Image Search
A check at Google Images showed my picture at #1 again and a total of 15 occurrences in the top 100 images. Showing up 1st in the image results has never been that important to me, but the result is more backlinks. I even found a few sites where some of my pictures were reposted. I guess I need to start taking pictures again…
Cornering the market – from Google to Bing
Last week, I started to check Bing in addition to Google due to the percentage of the US searches being performed on Google, Bing, and Yahoo (which is powered by Bing technology). Here are the top 3 Bing results (there were only 3 in the top 100):
- #2 – My LinkedIn profile (no change from last week at #2)
- #19 – @alanreeves on Twitter (no change from last week at #19)
- #53 – @bookwormlaser on Twitter ( down 5 spots from last week at #48)
Strategies for 1st
This week was very non-eventful except for the normal posting, sharing, etc. I published 5 posts, 1 video, and a handful of pictures. Next week looks worse (if that is possible) but I’m going to try to do a big push around Friday.
Summary – The search for Alan Reeves
I’ve been able to make a good amount of progress so far, going from #93 on 1-25-12 to #3 on 3-11-12 even though I have slipped to #5. I have learned a lot about improving search ranking and I have made a lot of mistakes, but this is a learning process. I hope to make significant progress by next week and regain my past progress. Stay tuned to see if next week is the week I reach the 1st spot on Google and Bing. If you have any suggestions to get me there, leave a comment and let me know.
