February 27, 2012 by Alan R Leave a Comment

1st on Google - 5th Week updateWelcome back to my journey to being 1st on Google. If you missed the first few posts, you can find the first one here, 1st Week Update here, 2nd Week Update here, 3rd Week Update here, and 4th Week Update here. Below are the results as of Sunday, 02-26-12 (click here to do your own search):

  • #2 – My LinkedIn profile page (no change from last week)
  • #11 – The About Me page from my personal blog, BlueCapra.com, with picture (down 1 place from last week at #10)
  • #52 – BlueCapra.com tag page; posts tagged ‘Alan Reeves’ (Up 19 places from last week at #71)
  • #60 – Comment I made on AndyTraub.com 2 months ago (Up 12 places from last week at #72)
  • #77 – Comment I made on CoachRadio.tv  around the middle of December 2011 (down 1 place from last week at #76)

This week was good for my journey to 1st on Google. I stayed at the #2 spot for my first occurrence which is promising. Since LinkedIn occupies the 1st spot, it will be tough to overcome such a large site but that is my goal and I will keep at it until I’m there.  Overall, my top 5 results increased 29 places, even though my 2nd and 5th occurrences were both down 1 spot from last week.  I showed up 5 times in the top 100 search results.

The power of never and always

February 23, 2012 by Alan R Leave a Comment

How often does never happen? What about always?  We hear people say they would never shop at that store or they always tell the truth.  But really, how often can they be right?

It is difficult to attach extreme words to any statement and have that statement stand the test of time.  If you always have a coffee on Friday mornings, what happens when you miss one?  If you never take out the trash, is it all better when you remember without being told?

It seems that never and always are words that imply a different meaning depending on who spoke them and who hears them.  To me, if you say that you will never do that again, you are lying because how can you know the future.  A better response is that you are sorry and will do your best to make sure it never happens.  Subtle, but important change in wording.  In the former, you are confident about the future; in the latter, you understand how fallible people are and that all we can do is give it our best.  Same with always.

Never and always rarely happen in the real world.  It is time for our words to reflect reality.

Am I doing the right thing?

February 16, 2012 by Alan R Leave a Comment

Doing the right thing is not always popular.  It’s not always easy.  It’s always right.

In business and in personal life, the right thing is somtimes difficult to spot.  It gets easier with practice, but for it to get easier, you must practice.  Everyday, you must make a choice, a conscious choice, to do the right thing.  Not just some of the time, but all of the time.

Your choices may be big or small.  They may be as simple as calling in sick when you are not, as massive as running a corporation in a responsible way, or as important to our character as telling the truth, even when it hurts.  We all must make those big and small choices to do the right thing, and we must make them daily.

In a world that seems to be moving in the wrong direction, we must persist.  We must dedicate ourselves to make the choice, the right choice, and choose what is right above all else.

I choose to do what is right, how about you?

Have you met my wife?

February 14, 2012 by Alan R 4 Comments

My wife SharonShe is a great wife.  The best wife in the world, at least to me she is.  Her name is Sharon.  She does so much for me and for the family.  Here are a few noteworthy things about her:

  • She is a homeschooling teacher to a 6 year old and a 4 year old
  • She runs our farm where we raise Tennessee Fainting Goats (Goatspots.com)
  • She answers many, many questions regarding goat care from people around the web (even giving a phone interview to someone in Japan and taking pictures that are featured in a book)
  • She has supported me through thick and thin, especially through my latest business launch (Book Worm Laser & Design)
  • She is willing to pick up a wild snake in the woods for her kids to experience
  • She helps in our church children’s department on only when she has agreed, but also when it is needed above and beyond.
  • She has two blogs (Random spots of Thought & The Random Homeschool Spot)
  • She is writing a fiction book (really good so far)
  • She has completed a NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), writing over 50,000 words in a month
  • Plus much, much more (too much to list)
  • And most of all, she puts up with me all the time

Yes, she is the best wife in the world.  I love you Sharon.  Happy Valentines Day!
