Strategies for 1st

This week I tried to implement a few tips from Neil Patel in his Advanced Guide to Linkbuilding.  This is the third guide he has released and as usual, the content is outstanding.  I focused on Chapter 11, step 3 (Funneling with Likes) and step 5 (Funneling PR by following). It is still early in the process but progress has already been made.

First off, when I checked the PR of my Pinterest profiles (both personal and business), my Book Worm Laser & Design Pinterest profile had a PR of 3 which was surprising. By using the tips in Step 3, I browsed Pinterest and Liked several great pins.  Browsing Pinterest can be a huge time wasting hole of unproductivity but I enjoy looking around for a few minutes for ideas and design inspiration.  There is so much great content and ideas floating around on Pinterest, you are missing out if you don’t check it out a few minutes a day or so.  Just try not to linger too long or the gravitational pull will suck you in for hours…

Next, per Step 5, I created a Behance.net profile.  If you are not familiar with Behance, it is a place where creative people can showcase their work.  There are photographers, artists, digital artists, painters, product designers, and much, much more.  I’ve heard of Behance before and thought I had a created a profile a long time ago but no luck.  After creating the profile and fixing it up with links and a picture, I went in search of some great artists to follow.

There is some amazing work on Behance.  If you haven’t taken a chance to have a look, check it out.  Some of my favorite projects include typography (especially with all the swirly lines and stuff) and simple logos but there is a lot of variety out there.

I decided to add two projects of my own, my laser engraved armadillo notepad and my laser engraved manhole coasters.  I hope to get some feedback on them so if you have a few minutes, please checkout my profile and let me know what you think about the projects.  There are even videos of the laser engraving.

The best thing about my new Behance profile (as it pertains to this series of posts) is how quickly it showed up in the Google top 100 results.  I started working on Behance and Pinterest around the middle part of last week.  When I did my search for this post on Sunday night, my Behance profile showed up at #94.  I think that is the fastest I have ever had a profile jump into view on Google.  Granted, I am looking at the top 100 results every week but I’ve had profiles built for months that I’ve never seen in Google.  Keep that in mind for your SEO efforts and give Behance a look.

One quick thought; all of this activity, the Likes, Follows, Google +’s, etc, are a way to show support and appreciation.  Most of the profiles I create are for SEO benefit but Liking pins and showing appreciation for Behance projects is the important part.  Sure, there are some benefits for Liking or showing appreciation but the real benefit is being exposed to great work.

Summary – The search for Alan Reeves

I’ve been able to make good progress since the start, going from #91 on 1-25-12 to #2 on 2-26-12 and to #3 today. I have learned a lot about improving search ranking and I have made a lot of mistakes, but it’s a learning process. Stay tuned to see if next week is the week I reach the 1st spot on Google and Bing.

If you only had time to do 1 thing to help your site or name rank better in Google, what would it be?  Leave me a comment and let me know.
