Personal SEO - Getting to 1st on Google - Week 90 - 3rd on GoogleWelcome back to my journey to being 1st on Google.  This is the 90th update for my attempt to rank first for my name, Alan Reeves.  If you missed any of the posts, you can find the first one here, 89th Week update here (last week), and the ones in between on my Project page. Below are the results as of Sunday, 10-13-13 (click here to do your own search for Alan Reeves on Google):

  • #3 – My Pinterest profile (up 6 places from last week at #9)

This week I’m back on the front page at #9.  Overall, my top 5 results increased 20 places with 5 of the top 5 results occurring in the first 25 places.  As a whole, I showed up 16 times in the top 100 search results.

A check at Google Images showed my picture at #4 and a total of 22 occurrences in the top 100 images, which I think is a new record.

Cornering the market – from Google to Bing

In addition to searching Google, I have been checking Bing results for my name, Alan Reeves (click here to do your own Bing search for Alan Reeves).  Here are the top 5 Bing results:

  • #13 – My profile on 48Days.NET (down 1 place from last week at #12)
  • #18 – My BrandYourself profile (down 4 places from last week at #14)
  • #30 – My About.Me page (down 10 places from last week at #20)

This week I’m at #5 on Bing.  Overall, my top 5 results decreased 15 places with 4 of the top 5 results occurring in the first 25 places.  As a whole, I showed up 11 times in the top 100 search results.

A check at Bing Images showed my picture at #8 and a total of 8 occurrences in the top 100 images.

Strategies for 1st

This week I tried to focus on commenting on posts, specifically on podcast posts.  My issue until now was that I tend to listen to all my podcasts while driving.  That makes it difficult to comment while the information is fresh on my mind.

To help that, I made a point to stop driving when I was finished with the podcast and comment from my phone.  Everyone is different but typing on my iPhone is not something I enjoy doing.  I can barely tolerate it for anything longer than the short messages I send to my wife.  But, I wanted to see how feasible it was.  Although it is not a great solution, the concept is good.  In the coming weeks, I will try doing voice recording and transcribing the result for the comment.

When choosing posts to comment on, podcasts tend to have fewer comments on many sites.  The fewer comments, the more attention they get, especially from the site owner.  Be sure to leave a good, thoughtful comment and interact with the author.  That’s what most authors want.  Ask them a question, tell them how you are going to apply the great information from the podcast, tell them their podcast sucks and why it sucks.  Interact with them in a respectful way and not only will you often have great conversations, your influence will grow as a result.

Summary – The search for Alan Reeves

I’ve been able to make good progress since the start, going from #91 on 1-25-12 to #1 on 7-14-13 and to #3 today. I have learned a lot about improving search ranking and I have made a lot of mistakes, but it’s a learning process. Stay tuned to see if I can hold on to the 1st spot on Google and reach 1st on Bing.
