Welcome back to my journey to being 1st on Google. If you missed the first few posts, you can find the first one here, 7th Week update here, and the ones in between on my Project page. Below are the results as of Sunday, 03-18-12 (click here to do your own search):
- #16 – My profile on Vimeo – check out my video series Can You Etch It (down 13 places from last week at #3)
- #17 – My personal blog, BlueCapra.com, with picture (down 3 places from last week at #14)
- #32 – My LinkedIn profile (down 15 from last week at #17)
- #40 – The post, How Would You Use a MeTag@trade; from CoachRadio.tv about one of my laser engraving products, the MeTag™ (down 11 places from last week at #29)
- #87 – The page listing the followers to my business Pintrest boards (down 28 places from last week at #59)
Do you hear that? That whistling sound is my ranking plummeting. This week pretty awful for my journey to 1st on Google. I dropped to the #16 spot for my first occurrence. Overall, my top 5 results decreased 70 places. I showed up 5 times in the top 100 search results, which is 3 less than last week.
Strategies for 1st
This week I only commented on 1 post. Although I believe I actually commented on more, that is all I have recorded. Yes, I am a huge slacker this week and it shows in the results. I resubmitted an article to EzineArticles and I am awaiting for it to be reviewed. If accepted, that will be my second article on the site.
One of my main strategies for improving my ranking is commenting on other blogs. Although these links are NOFOLLOW, meaning the search engines won’t crawl those links, they do associate the anchor text with the link. Back on the 1st week update, I wrote about the hierarchy that Google uses for the list ranking. Basically, links to your site are good, links to your site with specific anchor texts (especially your site) are better, but the best is links to your site from important or well-known sites. Even if the links in my comments are NOFOLLOW, those links are very helpful by associating my name as anchor text with a link of my choosing, typically this site.
As a way to track improvement, I keep up with several metrics to see improvement. Those metrics include: Unique Visitors, Page Views, Page Views/Visitor, and Inbound Links. Those numbers are gathered from Google Webmaster tools, a free service offered by Google. I started to track my inbound links right after my 1st week update. The inbound links to this site , BlueCapra.com, increased from 311 on 1-30-12 to 632 as of 3-18-12. Those links helped me go from #93 to the a personal best of #2 on Google and will eventually help me get to the 1st spot.
Blogs I have commented on during the past week
The Simple Dollar – Extend the Life and Value of Crayons (72/365)
Summary – The search for Alan Reeves
I’ve been able to make a good amount of progress so far, going from #93 on 1-25-12 to #3 on 3-11-12 even though I have slipped to #16. I have learned a lot about improving search ranking and I have made a lot of mistakes, but this is a learning process. I hope to make significant progress by next week and regain my past progress. Stay tuned to see if next week is the week I reach the 1st spot on Google. If you have any suggestions to get me there, leave a comment and let me know.
