June 25, 2012 by Alan R Leave a Comment

1st on Google - Preview of the LinkedIn profile of Alan ReevesWelcome back to my journey to being 1st on Google. This is the 21st update.  If you missed the any of the posts, you can find the first one here, 21th Week update here (last week), and the ones in between on my Project page. Below are the results as of Sunday, 6-24-12 (click here to do your own search):

  •  #3 – My LinkedIn profile (no change from last week at #3)
  • #13 – My BrandYourself.com profile (down 2 places from last week at #11)
  • #16 – The About page on BlueCapra.com, with picture  (up 15 places from last week at #31)
  • #36 – @bookwormlaser on Twitter (down 2 places from last week at #34)
  • #37 – My profile on 48Days.net (up 7 places from last week at #44)
This week I’m at #3 again, same as last week.  The first occurrence of a link that is pointing to one of my sites is #16.  Overall, my top 5 results increased 3 places with 3 of the top 5 results occurring in the first 25 places, an improvement from last week.  As a whole, I showed up 14 times in the top 100 search results.

Image Search

A check at Google Images showed my picture at #3 and a total of 5 occurrences in the top 100 images.

Cornering the market – from Google to Bing

Last week, I started to check Bing in addition to Google due to the percentage of the US searches being performed on Google, Bing, and Yahoo (which is powered by Bing technology).  Here are the top 5 Bing results:

  • #2 – My LinkedIn profile (no change from last week at #2)
  • #17 – The About page on BlueCapra.com  (down 4 places from last week at #13)
  • #20 – @alanreeves on Twitter (no change from last week at #20)
  • #22 – My profile on Quora (down 1 place from last week at #21)
  • #76 – My Quora feed with my recent activity (down 34 places from last week at #42)

Overall, I showed up 6 times in the top 100 search results on Bing.  My first occurrence was at #2 (compared with Google at #5) and overall, my results decreased 39 places.

I did manage to rank 3rd for images on Bing, and overall, had 2 in the top 100 images.

Strategies for 1st

This week I was able to add another linked page via the Bing Linked Pages site which makes 8 or so pages I have found.  It is difficult to determine how much the Bing Linked Pages really help the ranking, but they can’t hurt.  The links are placed on the Facebook profile that you used to login into the Bing site.  The links are NOFOLLOW, but at least the anchor text is helpful.

Summary – The search for Alan Reeves

I’ve been able to make a good amount of progress so far, going from #91 on 1-25-12 to #3 on 3-11-12 and back to #3 today. I have learned a lot about improving search ranking and I have made a lot of mistakes, but this is a learning process.  I hope to make significant progress by next week and regain my past progress.  Stay tuned to see if next week is the week I reach the 1st spot on Google and Bing.  If you have any suggestions to get me there, leave a comment and let me know.
