Welcome back to my journey to being 1st on Google. If you missed the first few posts, you can find the first one here, 11th Week update here, and the ones in between on my Project page. Below are the results as of Sunday, 04-15-12 (click here to do your own search):
- #5 – My LinkedIn profile (up 10 place from last week at #15)
- #12 – My personal blog, BlueCapra.com, with picture (up 18 places from last week at #30)
- #27 – My profile on Vimeo – check out my video series Can You Etch It (up 4 place from last week at #31)
- #38 – The About Me page from my personal blog, BlueCapra.com, with picture (up 6 places from last week at #44)
- #50 – The post, How Would You Use a MeTag™? from CoachRadio.tv about one of my laser engraving products, the MeTag™ (no change from last week at #50)
This week I am back up to #5. The links occupying the top 4 spots include IMDb, Wikipedia (twice), and LinkedIn, all with way high page rank. My first occurrence is at #5 and overall, my top 5 results increased 38 places. I showed up 9 times in the top 100 search results which is down 1 from last week, but a welcome improvement from past weeks. It does seem that the results can fluctuate a great deal week to week (sometimes referred to as the Google dance) but the same big sites are showing up time and time again.
To continue something new from last week, I did an image search and my picture showed up 3rd again.
Cornering the market – from Google to Bing
From the research I have done and the information I have read, Google has the main market share of the search at around 65% with Bing coming in second at about 29% (source: March 2012 US Search Market Share Report by comScore). Microsoft (Bing) powers Yahoo so those results combine to get about 29%. Until now, I have been focusing on Google results which are by far the most valuable when it comes to market share, but if I could hit 1st on both Google and Bing, I would have about 94% of the world’s eyes when searching for Alan Reeves (which admittedly is very small to start with). So, without further ado, here are the top 5 Bing results:
- #6 – My LinkedIn profile
- #9 – Can You Etch It – Laser eEngraved CD Jewel Case – Vimeo
- #19 – @alanreeves on Twitter
- #34 – A review I wrote about My Life & The Principles of Success by Ross Perot on GoodReads.com
- #38 – @bookwormlaser on Twitter
Strategies for 1st
This week I decided to jump in and go through my large backlog of posts in Google Reader, my RSS reader. Of the 60+ posts I read, I commented on 19 of them and mostly at the beginning of the week. I left a few forum comments but most of those are answering laser engraving questions with no link back to my sites. Even without the links, I hope I am adding value to those reading the posts. I don’t feel that I am a laser engraving expert in any way, but I do know a considerable amount more than most people in the general public.
Summary – The search for Alan Reeves
I’ve been able to make a good amount of progress so far, going from #93 on 1-25-12 to #3 on 3-11-12 even though I have slipped to #5. I have learned a lot about improving search ranking and I have made a lot of mistakes, but this is a learning process. I hope to make significant progress by next week and regain my past progress. Stay tuned to see if next week is the week I reach the 1st spot on Google and Bing. If you have any suggestions to get me there, leave a comment and let me know.
