Welcome back to my journey to being 1st on Google. If you missed the first few posts, you can find the first one here, 10th Week update here, and the ones in between on my Project page. Below are the results as of Sunday, 04-08-12 (click here to do your own search):
- #15 – The About Me page from my personal blog, BlueCapra.com, with picture (down 10 places from last week at #5)
- #30 – My profile on Vimeo – check out my video series Can You Etch It (down 18 place from last week at #13)
- #31 – My LinkedIn profile (down 11 place from last week at #21)
- #44 – BlueCapra.com tag page; posts tagged ‘Alan Reeves’ (down 10 places from last week at #34)
- #50 – The post, How Would You Use a MeTag™? from CoachRadio.tv about one of my laser engraving products, the MeTag™ (up 29 places from last week at #79)
This week was similar a few weeks ago (week 8) when my results tanked. At first glance, it looks like another terrible week but there is a little bit of a silver lining. My first occurrence is at #15 and overall, my top 5 results decreased 20 places. I showed up 10 times in the top 100 search results (my silver lining). This is two more times than I have ever showed up in the top 100 which is promising. I’m not sure I like the trade-off, the drop in my first showing vs. number of listings in the top 100, but that is the way things are. It does seem that the results can fluctuate a great deal week to week (sometimes referred to as the Google dance) but the same big sites are showing up time and time again.
Just for grins, I did an image search and my picture showed up 3rd.
Strategies for 1st
This week I started back commenting on posts, mostly due to the backlog of about 100 posts I wanted to read. I commented on 15 different posts, most of them late in the week. At this point in the game, I believe one of my important goals is to associate this website (BlueCapra.com) with my name as the anchor text. Commenting on posts does that even though those back links are NOFOLLOW and in theory, no credit is given. To fully complete the spirit of my goal, I want this site to show up 1st on the list , not just a link to my LinkedIn profile or other site. Now, I’ll take what I can get and will gladly accept success when I show up 1st, but I really want something of mine to be there.
One interesting post I read this week was about a niche site built by Nick McIntosh, How I Made My First Internet Dollar – A Passive Income Niche Site Case Study. I am planning to try my hand at a niche site one day so I try to read as much as possible on the subject. It was a really good post but the major thing that caught my eye was in the Marketing the Content section. Nick said that he used article marketing to get to the 1st spot on Google. To accomplish this, he submitted 2000 articles. Yes, 2000. Accepting that my name most likely has less competition than nettle tea (the keyword Nick was working on), I can assume that it may be some time before I get close to 1000 article submission, post comments, posts I’ve written, and videos. As Nick said, this is a lot of work.
Summary – The search for Alan Reeves
I’ve been able to make a good amount of progress so far, going from #93 on 1-25-12 to #3 on 3-11-12 even though I have slipped to #15. I have learned a lot about improving search ranking and I have made a lot of mistakes, but this is a learning process. I hope to make significant progress by next week and regain my past progress. Stay tuned to see if next week is the week I reach the 1st spot on Google. If you have any suggestions to get me there, leave a comment and let me know.
